Ashleigh's coloured hair for the World's greatest shave

The World’s Greatest Shave is now in its 19th year,  a charitable event in support of the leukaemia foundation which started in 1975.

Be brave and shave. Leukaemia Foundation.

More than 12,000 people will be diagnosed this year with leukaemia – that is 35 people diagnosed every day. The money raised from the World’s Greatest Shave will fund cancer research and will give free support to the Leukaemia foundation and families.

Many people and celebrities get involved each year. Brendon Fevola, a retired AFL footballer, gave his time last Friday at Federation Square to shave people’s hair or colour it. “It’s great to see so many people here participating,” said Mr Fevola.

One young girl with wavy long hair and has never cut it had her head completely shaved by Mr Fevola.

Ryan, from Hastings, had a powerful message tattooed on the back of his head which Mr Fevola discovered when he shaved Ryan’s head. The message is very relevant to the cause. Find out what that message is from the video.

Ashleigh, 22 from Mooroolbark, is just one of many that is participating this year. “I decided to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave this year because I wanted to help in some way”, Ashleigh said. She has received a lot of sponsors which has helped her to raise over $700.50 to date.

Many choose to colour their hair instead of shaving which allows more people to participate. Ashleigh decided to colour her hair purple. “All my friends absolutely love it, they have said it really suits me.”

This is Ashleigh’s first time participating she said. “I have learnt that even just the smallest amount donated helps families in a big way,” she said.

Sponsoring a participant just $52 will help ensure someone being treated in hospital gets a personal visit from a highly-trained health professional so they get the extra support they need. No matter how much you give, it’s an extraordinary way to make a difference.

The record donation is $12,518.900, you can go to The World’s Greatest Shave website to see how much they have raised this year so far. You can sponsor anyone right up until June 30th.
