CDFL officials have named a 25-man side for Saturday’s Interleague clash with Horsham & District Football League in the AFL Victoria Community Championships.
The side is a good blend of youth and experience, as the CDFL look the carry on their winning form from last year’s 61-point victory over the Mid Gippsland Football League. The side currently sits 32nd in the AFL Victoria country rankings.
However, Coach Steve O’Dowd said he was still waiting to hear on the availability of VFL listed pair Ben Cox and Tim Speirs. The North Ballarat listed Cox booted 4 goals in last year’s Interleague victory.
Both Cox and Speirs played for South Colac on the weekend, so O’Dowd is hopeful the CDFL can get their services.
“North Ballarat were aware early last week they were both keen to play for us, so hopefully we can get both of them. North Ballarat train tonight (Wednesday night) so we should know this evening if we have got them,” O’Dowd said.
O’Dowd said he was happy with the composition of his squad, and goes into the clash against Horsham with full faith in his side’s ability.
“We’ve got a really good midfield, a really strong one that we’re really happy with, and good options up forward who are all in form and are kicking goals”, he said.
O’Dowd has also put the onus on his group, believing they couldn’t be better prepared.
“It’s been a strong squad from the start, with no real weaknesses,” O’Dowd said. “We’ve got no excuses this year.”
The side features no less than eight Birreguarra players, including stars Stephen Salajan, Jack Moorfoot and Christian Kelly.
The side also boasts some GFL talent, with former Colac Tigers Sean and Kane Smartt representing Lorne, as is ex-St Joseph’s youngster Sean Holroyd. Daniel Razga, an ex-Grovedale Tiger also features.
The CDFL take on Horsham & District in Horsham from 2pm on Saturday.
