Geelong born Alexandra Lidgerwood is on the road to success after being accepted into the Young Artist Program at the Berlin Opera Academy this year.
Alexandra has always been involved with music, and has fond memories of singing with her father who was also a singer and a seasoned theatre performer.
Her parents owned the iconic Buena Vista Motel in Belmont for nine years, and Alexandra remembers her father performing ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ for the bus loads of tourists who stopped at the motel.
Alexandra found her true passion for opera after watching a Hungarian performance of the Merry Widow, one of her favourite operettas, when she was just 14.
“It just looked like so much fun and I just went that’s it, that’s what I want to do,” Alexandra says.
After completing a Bachelor degree in music in 2012, Alexandra received a Young Artist place with Gertrude Opera in Melbourne. For three years she performed in numerous roles and productions and was awarded two scholarships in her time there.
This also gave her the opportunity to work with some of the best directors and singers in Australia and from overseas.
Alexandra is now taking the next step forward in her career and is extremely excited to be attending the Berlin Opera Academy.
“It’s a chance to work in another country, which is something I hope to do in the future, and it’s good to make overseas connections” she says.
Attending the Academy will give Alexandra the chance to work with some of the best singers, conductors and directors there, and allow her to perform in a number of productions.
She will also have the chance to audition for German opera agents.
Alexandra will be making her international debut singing the Puccini roles of Gheradino in Gianni Schicchi and Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica.
Alexandra has created a crowdfunding page to help cover the costs of her tuition in Berlin as well as travel expenses.
