Local sport and, more specifically, local football is often the heartbeat of regional towns. The AFL has a bye this weekend before its finals series starts, but all three local leagues in Geelong are in the midst of their own finals. Here are a few reasons why you should get along, whether you are a devotee or not.
1) IT’S THE ONLY FOOTY ON
What better reason is there? Thirst for football never reaches a higher point as the calendar ticks over to September, yet there is no AFL on this weekend, as mentioned above, as they take the week off before finals. So you can scratch the football itch this weekend locally instead, on both Saturday and Sunday.
2) IT’S CHEAP!
Other than wanting to see some football this weekend, the other great incentive to get down and watch is not doubt the cost effectiveness of watching. In an environment where the AFL is worried sick about ‘fan engagement’ and is fixing ticket prices as fans become increasingly incensed with the cost of watching top-line football, you can roll up to any one of the five games this weekend throughout the region for under $10! Yes, under $10. Kiddies get in for free and students get a discount.
3) IT’S A QUALITY STANDARD
In Geelong we are lucky all three leagues in the region (Geelong Football League, Bellarine Football League, Geelong & District Football League) feature in the top 33 competitions state-wide. This is an unprecedented feat, so no matter where you go you will see some good football, and not some dreary, low standard game. If you’re close to the CBD, the GFL is the #1 ranked league in Victoria and has its finals played at the Cats’ home ground Simonds Stadium. Live more coastal? Bellarine finals continue down at Drysdale. What if you live more in the west? Fear not, the GDFL’s penultimate week is at St Albans.
