There are some sporting moments that just make your heart sing. I’m talking about the ones where you have a ‘I remember where I was when ..’ moment. Well, one of those happened on 28 April this year when 20-year old Newcastle Jets soccer player Riley McGree did a show-stopping scorpion kick that helped put his team into the grand final.

For Melbourne City, it was a painful moment. They’d been ahead most of the match when the 19,000 fans in the Newcastle Stadium were treated to the kick of the round – in the running for best kick ever in the A-league. The pain turned to anguish when Newcastle scored again putting the league’s biggest prize out of Melbourne City’s grasp, for this year at least.

Our Aussie boy’s kick has gone viral around the world, with one youtube upload post already attracting more than half a million views – not bad for the boy from down under. Some international sporting commentators are touting it as being in contention for the goal of the century.
