For as long as I can remember I’ve contemplated signing up to a gym, but I’ve always had a string of excuses to sway me away – one of those excuses being cost.
I’m a uni student, and like any other uni student, money is a struggle and I couldn’t justify a gym membership without knowing whether or not I’d be fully committed to it.
So, like any other money-savvy-student in their twenties, I began my google search…
And there it was to my surprise a two-week free trial to one of my local gyms. Turns out the Australian Government are trying to get females more active by providing an array of free gym trials for girls and women. I downloaded the voucher on my phone, went to the gym the next day and I haven’t looked back since.
So, just what advice does gym newbie have to share?
Nobody cares what you look like
A voice in my head was often telling me I needed to be in shape before I went to the gym, so I wouldn’t look like an idiot. But soon enough after a few days in, I learned that no one cares what you look like at all. Don’t worry about how sweaty, puffed or exhausted you may look during your workout because you’re probably the only one that notices. I can say confidently no one’s watching you and everyone is focused on themselves and themselves only.
Morning or night?
Personally, I find morning sessions to be so much better. Not only does it knock out your workout before the day really begins, but also, I found myself more energized and willing to workout in the morning. Most mornings I set myself the goal to be at the gym by 7am, which meant I was out of there around 8am and still had hours ahead of me in my day.
Music makes all the difference
Having a good playlist really does help you get the most out of your workout. On my fifth day at the gym I got there and realized I forgot my earphones. I was devasted and instantly knew my workout would lack. Dramatic, I know, but seriously nothing beats blasting your music to pump you up and help you get through a sweaty gym session.
You don’t need a gym buddy
I signed up to this trial with a friend as I thought there would be no way I would ever enter the gym alone. But turns out I loved going to the gym by myself. I saw it as my escape to get out of the house and just zone out. While it was great to have my friend with me from time to time, I felt great going there by myself to focus on myself.
The gym can be enjoyable and addictive
While I don’t believe I’m the least fit person out there, I definitely never saw myself enjoying the gym. But as time went on, I was actually excited about going to the gym for my daily workout. You feel good, positive and accomplished when you hit the gym, and that feeling kept me going back every day.
You’re stronger than you think
The first day I stepped foot into the gum, I sucked. Not only was I intimidated, but I felt weak and completely and utterly out of my depth. But as the days and weeks progressed, I quickly found myself improving, setting new personal records, and achieving new strength and stamina that I once believed would be impossible. Not only did the gym make me feel better but it made me learn things about myself that I didn’t think I would ever be able to achieve.
Just do it
Before commencing my free trial, I had never entered into a gym before. I know how intimidating and overwhelming the gym can be. So many of us are held back by our own limiting beliefs, especially when we are just starting out something new. But who knows the gym could actually be somewhere you like! The gym allowed me to push myself, focus on myself and achieve self-improvement. Now, I can now openly say I love the gym, and I’m wanting to make it a habitual part of my everyday life. I never thought I’d say it but… I’ve been converted.
While there’s no denying that the first step is always the hardest, a free trial membership is the perfect way for you to discover what the gym has to offer. Are you interested in giving the gym a shot? Ladies – you have multiple free trial offers here to choose from until the end of September. Guys – you can suss out this list and see if you there’s a gym near you offering a free trial period. You won’t regret it.
