With the number of vegans in Melbourne on the increase, several cafes now serve exclusively plant-based meals. I found the following gems on my vegan restaurant hunt.

RED SPARROW, Collingwood

They don’t just make the best vegan pizza in Melbourne, they make the best pizza period, offering an extensive range of mock-meat options. Bonus points for friendly, warm staff and a cosy, intimate dining area.

LENTIL AS ANYTHING, Abbotsford

Served in buffet style, the food here is spectacular with the menu offering a wonderful mix of flavours, such as delicious Sri Lankan curry and nutritious tofu lentil burger. The setting, in beautiful gardens, is lovely and the concept of pay-as-you-feel, volunteerism and sustainability is commendable.

SMITH AND DAUGHTERS, Fitzroy

Set in a trendy rock n’ roll setting, this is one of the few vegan restaurants where you’d believe the fare on offer is meat. Beautifully presented, the marvellous Italian fare is one of a kind. Both the carpaccio and meatballs are particularly delightful.

MATCHA MYLKBAR, St Kilda

With wonderful coffee and food, Matcha Mylkbar is the gold standard for Vegan cafes. Recommended from a delicious list are the vegan ‘eggs’ and pancakes, both mouthwatering. Friendly, helpful staff and a great atmosphere further cement its place on this list.

THE VEGIE BAR, Fitzroy

Healthy, wholesome and delectable, The Vegie Bar is a treat to the tastebuds offering a diverse array from gnocchi to nachos. The desserts are among the best of any plant-based restaurant, especially the succulent gelatos.
