With International Day of Happiness just around the corner, Julie Embrey took a small but significant step in her mental health journey — attending a group talk on mental wellness at the Hawthorn Library. For Julie, who has long struggled with mental health challenges, the event wasn’t just about listening; it was about finding connection and hope in the words of others.

Julie’s battle with anxiety and depression has been ongoing for years. There have been days when even stepping outside felt like an impossible task. But as she sat in the library, surrounded by others seeking solace and inspiration, she realised she wasn’t alone.
“The speaker talked about small victories — how getting out of bed, making a cup of tea, or showing up to an event like this are all victories,” Julie, who didn’t want her last name published, said. “That really stuck with me. I don’t have to have all the answers, I just have to keep going.”
The talk, which featured expert in neuropsychology Dr Janine Cooper, explored strategies for cultivating happiness, managing stress, and the importance of seeking support. Attendees were encouraged to share their own experiences, creating a space of understanding and encouragement.
For Julie, moments like these reinforce the importance of community. “Hearing others speak openly about their struggles made me feel seen,” she said. “It’s easy to feel isolated when you’re dealing with mental health issues, but events like this remind you that support is out there.”

For International Day of Happiness, on March 20, Julie is focusing on small, mindful steps toward well-being. Whether it’s attending another talk, taking a quiet walk, or simply acknowledging progress, she’s learning that happiness isn’t about constant joy — it’s about resilience, connection, and moments of peace along the way.
For anyone struggling, Julie offers this message: “You’re not alone. There are people who care, who understand, and who want to help. And sometimes, just showing up is enough.”
